Calhoun High School students win big at UHV/VC math, computer science event

Roger Wang, a senior at Calhoun High School in Port Lavaca, won first place overall in the computer science contest at the UHV/VC Math and Computer Science Awareness Day on Thursday

Two Calhoun High School students won the top prizes and scholarships Thursday at the University of Houston-Victoria/The Victoria College Math and Computer Science Awareness Day contests.

Senior Roger Wang won first place overall in the math contest while junior Tracy Lu won in the computer science contest. Both students will receive a $500 scholarship to Victoria College and a $2,000 scholarship to UHV. Last year, Lu took top honors in both categories.

Students at the event took written math and computer science tests that were scored in teams and individually.

The approximately 50 contestants, along with other students who participated in the event, attended seminars with topics including computer graphics and robot building. They also had a pizza party and listened to guest speaker Sarah McKenna, chief meteorologist at local television station KAVU. This year’s theme was “Mathematics and Climate.”

The event was sponsored by UHV, VC and Alcoa Foundation.
