Despite Tuition Increase, UHV Remains a 'Best Buy' for High-Quality Programs
While the University of Houston System Board of Regents decided Monday to increase tuition at all four system universities, the University of Houston-Victoria remains a “best buy” for high-quality, accredited programs.
Students at UHV will experience the smallest increase throughout the UH System at 7.5 percent, compared to 9.9 percent at UH-Main and UH-Downtown and 8.9 percent at UH-Clear Lake.
“Despite this increase, UHV remains one of the most cost-effective universities in the region. Currently, within a 200-mile radius, the average cost per semester hour for a full-time student is about $200. For students at UHV, the average is about $150,” said UHV Chief Financial Officer Wayne Beran, who led the process for determining the tuition increase at UHV. The process included discussions among Cabinet members regarding enrollment projections and compensation for faculty members. Those discussions were followed by tuition and fee hearings that allowed for input from students and members of the community.
UHV President Tim Hudson added, “In order for UHV to continue to provide opportunities for higher education throughout the Victoria-Houston region, the university must have funds to compensate its faculty and develop attractive programs for current and potential students.”
Those developing programs include a bachelor’s degree program in nursing, a master’s in computer information systems, and hands-on research opportunities for students in biological sciences.
Additionally, the online MBA at UHV was recently named one of the top 25 “best buys” in distance learning MBAs by Get Educated.com. The designation indicates that the program has been found to offer a high-quality distance degree to a national audience at tuition rates well below the national average.
“The UHV administration keeps us informed about how funds are being used. I feel that the increase will ultimately benefit the university and the students, and therefore, I’m in full support of it,” said Kerry Mix, a graduate student in the School of Education and Human Development and a member of the Student Fees Advisory Committee. “It will help UHV to continue to fulfill its mission of providing quality education.”
