UHV School of Business Administration names outstanding graduates
When it came to getting their degrees, two students graduating from the University of Houston-Victoria this semester really got down to business.
Lindsey Ferguson and Lissette Guerra were named the outstanding undergraduate and graduate students, respectively, for the UHV School of Business Administration.
They will be recognized at 9 a.m. May 16 during the spring commencement ceremony at UHV, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.
Professors at each of the four UHV schools select at least one outstanding graduate each semester from both their bachelor’s and master’s programs to be honored during graduation.

“I was really honored, and my family is really proud,” said Ferguson, who also plays first base and serves as captain of the UHV Jaguars softball team.
“I think I’ve always been kind of a workman and always taken school seriously,” she said. “I enjoy learning. When I was really, really little, my grandfather drove into my head that knowledge is power, and my whole family has been really supportive of me and my schoolwork.”
Softball helped her to stay focused and encouraged her to work hard, she said.
Ferguson will receive her bachelor’s degree in business administration. She plans to return to UHV next semester and begin work on her master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in business and communication.

The award also was great news for Guerra. She credited her success to focus and hard work. She also had some advice for other students pursuing excellence.
“Stay focused on what you feel is right for you,” Guerra said. “It’s all about time management, just knowing how to juggle work and school life.”
She noted that most of her classmates work full time like she does. She is a senior supply analyst with an energy company in Houston. The firm supported her by paying for part of the cost of her degree.
“I hope I have gained an overall understanding of business from my Master of Business Administration, and I hope that it will help shape my future career path and accelerate my ability to get promoted and perform in higher-level management positions,” Guerra said.
Jifu Wang, dean of the School of Business Administration, spoke highly of both women.
“Graduates like these prove that through hard work and dedication, students can achieve great things,” he said. “These young women are a credit to this school and university. We expect to see great things from them in the future.”
The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region since 1973 in Victoria, Texas, offers courses leading to more than 80 academic programs in the schools of Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education, Health Professions & Human Development. UHV provides face-to-face classes at its Victoria campus, as well as an instructional site in Katy, Texas, and online classes that students can take from anywhere.
