UHV to offer three summer camps for area high school students
The University of Houston-Victoria is offering three day camps this summer for area high school students interested in writing, the environment or becoming female leaders.
“These camps are a way for UHV to use the vast expertise we have here on campus to benefit children living in the communities we serve,” said Nancy Penry, UHV training and continuing education coordinator, who oversees the camps. “We hope to see many of these students return to UHV when the time comes to continue their education on the college level.”
The registration deadline for all three camps is June 1, so those interested in attending are urged to register as soon as possible.
The camps will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The schedule for the camps and their individual costs are listed below:
Creative Writing, June 15 and 17

At Creative Writing Camp, students can learn how to write for fun and self-expression rather than just class assignments, said Thomas Williams, who will help run the camp and is chair of the Humanities Division in the UHV School of Arts & Sciences.
Students will start the camp by brainstorming ideas that experts will help them develop into essays, short stories or poems. Students will learn techniques they can use to develop and refine their writing on their own.
They also will see all the steps involved in the publishing process through a tour of the Fiction Collective Two press that recently moved to UHV.
Gyrlz Rule: Empowering Girls for Success, July 8-9

At Gyrls Rule, 11th- and 12th-grade girls will learn about self-esteem and leadership, and develop better communication and relationship skills. Catherine Perz, UHV director of undergraduate psychology programs, will be teaching at the camp.
The camp will include lots of hands-on activities and guest speakers to help round out the two days of fun.
Ecology Camp for Green Victoria, August 11-13

At Ecology Camp, students will learn about what pollutes the local community and what they can do to help fix the problem, said Siva Somasundaram, UHV director of undergraduate biology programs, who will be teaching at the camp.
On the first day, students will learn about different contaminates in the atmosphere and soil, and then go out and collect samples at Riverside Park to test for such contaminates in a UHV biology lab. On the second day, students will learn about biodiesel and then brew up their own samples in the lab. On the third day, students will learn how science can be used to remove pollutants from the environment through the use of bacteria and other methods.
“The camp will teach students how science can help make a cleaner and greener community,” Somasundaram said.
