Nominations sought for first Regional Small Business Awards

To honor the success of local entrepreneurs, the University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center is seeking nominations through July 31 for the first Golden Crescent/Coastal Bend Regional Small Business Awards.
“In these tough economic times, we want everyone to know the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in the 11-county area we serve,” said Jean Jurica, the SBDC training coordinator. Anyone can make a nomination, she noted.
Entrepreneurs can be nominated for the following awards:
- Small Business Person of the Year
- Entrepreneurial Success of the Year
In addition, individuals can be nominated for the five following awards for outstanding support of entrepreneurs:
- Financial Services Champion
- Minority Small Business Champion
- Small Business Journalist Champion
- Veteran Small Business Champion
- Women in Business Champion.
Nominations will be accepted from the UHV-SBDC’s service area, which includes Aransas, Bee, Calhoun, Dewitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties.
The awards will be presented at the Golden Crescent/Coastal Bend Regional Small Business Awards Banquet on Oct. 15. The SBDC plans to make the awards an annual event.
Winners may advance to district, state and national contests.National winners may receive an invitation to Washington, DC for the 2010 National Small Business Week activities sponsored by the Small Business Administration.
The UHV SBDC provides free, confidential business counseling and management assistance within its service area. Services include financial analysis, marketing, business planning, information research and loan proposal development.No-cost and low-cost training also is available.
The UHV SBDC is a partnership program with the U.S. Small Business Administration. All SBDC programs are non-discriminatory and open to the public.
