UHV Academic Center needs peer writing tutors for fall
Students who enjoy writing and want to help other students improve may have an ideal job waiting for them at the University of Houston-Victoria Academic Center as a peer writing tutor for the fall semester.

Most Academic Center peer writing tutors are UHV students from a variety of disciplines. All writing tutors receive training with specific documents and tutoring practice. The internationally recognized College Reading and Learning Association has approved the Academic Center to award certifications at the Regular, Advanced and Master Tutor levels.
Tutors work with students in both face-to-face and online settings. In addition to tutoring, most tutors become published writers by creating handouts, presentations and the Academic Center’s online grammar tip of the week, “Grammatically Correct.”
Honing interpersonal communication skills, gaining experience in the editing process, and developing a portfolio of published works are not the only things Academic Center writing tutors find appealing.
Amy Hatmaker, a lead tutor who is a UHV graduate, said helping others with writing has benefited her own academic pursuits.
“Working as a writing tutor provided me with valuable skills that I have needed to succeed in graduate studies,” Hatmaker said. “I have learned to think about research in new ways and have improved tremendously my own writing and editing skills.”
Writing tutors said that helping other students, and having a flexible schedule and competitive wages are among some of the best benefits of being a writing tutor. But the advantages of being a writing tutor are still recognizable years after leaving the Academic Center.
Judith Barefield, director of marketing for the DeTar Healthcare System, said her experience as an Academic Center writing tutor still proves invaluable in her current profession.
“As the marketing director at DeTar Healthcare System, I am often faced with the challenge of delivering the same message to physicians and staff members.” Barefield said. “My stint as a tutor helped me learn to craft my messages to better fit the needs of each group.”
