UHV writing tutor gets published in academic journal
The lead tutor at the University of Houston-Victoria Academic Center, who previously contributed to an encyclopedia, recently was published in an academic journal.
Amy Hatmaker wrote two books reviews that appeared in the spring edition of the Journal of South Texas, a biannual publication sent to all members of the South Texas Historical Association.
“It’s always exciting to be published,” she said.
Hatmaker reviewed “The Secret War for Texas” by Stuart Reid about the Texas Revolution, and “The Late Archaic Across the Borderlands: From Foraging to Farming,” a collection of essays edited by Bradley J. Vierra about the early tribes that quit roaming and began settling in Texas.
Hatmaker picked the two books from a list provided by the journal.
This is Hatmaker’s second time to be published. She was one of several UHV employees, students and an alumnus who contributed 25 articles to the recently released The International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest, 1500 to the Present.
Her three years at the center helped prepare Hatmaker to write her recently published works.
“It’s improved my own writing skills, and it’s made me more aware of audience needs,” she said.
Tutors being published reflects well on the center and its work, said Sandra Heinold, who oversees the center as manager of Academic and Career Services.
“The Academic Center offers all its writing tutors the training and the opportunity to write for publication on our Web site, which is accessed by users around the world,” she said. “It’s very exciting when our pride in our tutors is reinforced by external publishers. Amy is only beginning her career as an exemplary writer.”
Hatmaker earned her bachelor’s degree in humanities with a concentration in history from UHV in 2007 and is working on her master’s degree in history from another university.
