UHV student finds job, Criminal Justice Society helps with degrees

Melinda Law

University of Houston-Victoria student Melinda Law is a double major in communications and criminal justice and stays busy with classes, her job and the university’s Criminal Justice Society.

“I joined the Criminal Justice Society because I’m majoring in the field, and I was interested in supporting the School of Arts & Sciences,” Law said. “It was a way for me to interact with other students majoring in criminal justice, students who had the same goals I did.”

As a member, Law helps with fundraisers and special events, as well as attending regular meetings.

“Last semester, we held these seminars called Life After College seminars,” Law said. “We got to meet professionals from different parts of the criminal justice field. They told us about their jobs, educational backgrounds and what we, as students, needed to do to achieve our career goals.”

Law also is an audio/visual technician at UHV.

“My job deals mostly with our regular classrooms and the equipment in them,” Law said. “I check all the equipment biweekly to fix any problems. I also train professors at the beginning of each semester to make operating the equipment easier for them, and I set up Webinar meetings, which are meetings conducted on the Internet.”

In addition to repairing equipment and training personnel, Law often assists other students with computer problems.

She said she enjoys being a technician because it’s a hands-on job, and she’s always learning new material. But for Law, the most important aspect of working at UHV is the interaction with the faculty and students.

“Since I’m also a communications major, this job helps with my education,” Law said. “I’m constantly interacting with faculty and students. It has really helped me learn the professional side of communicating.”

Law plans on attending law school when she graduates in the spring of 2011. She would like to become a prosecuting criminal attorney.
