UHV student gets experience in Fort Bend County Attorney’s office

Candace Morris finds time to work in the Fort Bend County Attorney’s office along with taking classes from the University of Houston-Victoria.
“I want to practice law,” said Morris, who works full time as a legal assistant for the attorney representing Child Protective Services in the Fort Bend County family courts. “This job has given me a strong background in criminal and family law. It has introduced me to the community, including local judges and attorneys. I have gained experience that will help me further my career when I graduate.”
A special program at B.F. Terry High School in Rosenberg, where Morris graduated in 2001, allowed her to start working at the District Attorney’s office when she was 17 years old. Students in the program attended classes for half the day and worked the remaining hours they normally would have used to take electives.
“I started out as a filing clerk and then moved up to a full-time secretary,” she said. “Finally, I transferred to my current position four years ago.” Morris said she wanted to work with Child Protective Services because as a clerk, she often assisted that division and enjoyed the people there, but she also knew she was making an impact in the welfare of the clients.
“I like knowing we make a difference in the lives of children,” Morris said. “When we see children adopted or see parents rehabilitated and reunited with their children, the job is well worth it.”
Morris takes classes at the University of Houston System at Sugar Land and is an English major specializing in technical writing. She plans on applying to the University of Houston Law School after she graduates from UHV and hopes to eventually practice family law in Fort Bend County.
