UHV student helps solve computer, student issues at university

University of Houston-Victoria student Ruston Raybon is interested in helping others whether it’s solving computer problems as a Help Desk technician at the university, working with students as the Student Senate treasurer or studying to eventually become a marriage and family counselor.
“By serving in the Student Senate, I get to see UHV in a whole new light,” said Raybon, who hopes to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in counseling psychology. “I am helping to shape the way our campus is seen by the student body and our community. It’s exciting to know that the precedents we set now will have a major impact on the future classes of UHV as it adds freshmen and sophomores.”
In addition to his treasurer duties on the Student Senate, Raybon works as a Help Desk technician in the UHV Information Technology Department. The Edna resident recently went to Las Vegas for the first time for a week of training on Help Star, a program IT uses to keep track of service requests.
“Going to Las Vegas was an amazing experience that helped me grow as an individual and an employee,” he said.
Raybon said having a good grasp of the Help Star program is essential for his job because the Help Desk can get up to 50 requests a day, and the program makes answering and solving those issues faster and more organized. Raybon said he also found time to enjoy the casinos and meet and play with people from around the world.
Raybon also recently won UHV’s U.S. Flag Constitution Day Contest by answering all 27 questions correctly. Questions ranged from topics like who attended the Constitutional Convention to specific questions about the individual articles comprised within the Constitution.
“Most of the answers I remembered from many hours of studying for history and government exams,” Raybon said. “I had to research the rest, but it was worth it. I got an awesome American flag that I’m going to fly on the flagpole at my grandfather’s house.”
