New grant means more UHV nursing scholarships

A $100,000 grant from the M.G. & Lillie A. Johnson Foundation to the University of Houston-Victoria School of Nursing will mean more nurse leaders for the community.
“This money will be used for scholarships to recruit the best and brightest RN to BSN and MSN students to become nurse leaders in this community and the surrounding area,” Founding Dean Kathryn Tart said.
UHV offers Johnson Scholarships and the Johnson Scholars program. Both exist to remove financial barriers for people who would make extraordinary nurse leaders if they were to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree, she said.
Johnson Scholarships are most often used to help recruit nurses into seeking a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing at UHV, Tart said.
Johnson Scholars are nurses who have excellent academic records and show exceptional potential for nursing leadership, she said.
“We are seeking scholars who are underrepresented in nursing, like men, those under the age of 32, and minorities, especially Hispanics,” Tart said.
Johnson Scholars receive full scholarships for full time study ot help them enter the workforce as nurse leaders as soon as possible, she said.
“The Johnson Foundation Board of Trustees has the vision to form these partnerships with us, which are the key to solving the statewide nursing shortage,” Tart said. “I want to personally thank them for their forward thinking and civic commitment.”
The Johnson Foundation has a long history of donating to educational and health care related causes.
