Grant to provide state-of-art equipment for nursing simulation center
Sugar Land – Thanks to a generous grant, the University of Houston System at Sugar Land soon will have new cutting edge equipment for the Methodist Hospital Sugar Land Nursing Simulation Center.
The Richmond-based George Foundation donated $203,468 to add new equipment to the facility, which will include the most advanced human simulators available to educate nurses.
The equipment will include a 3G Sim Man, which can mimic almost any human bodily function and health scenario; a human birth simulator; and two simulators for placing intravenous lines, said Kathryn Tart, founding dean of the University of Houston-Victoria School of Nursing, which offers the bachelor’s and master’s nursing programs at UHSSL.
The lab facility is shared with the Wharton County Junior College nursing program as part of a cooperative arrangement, she said.
“I’m very excited about this new equipment and our partnership with WCJC,” Tart said. “This one facility will produce new nurses, nurse leaders and nurse educators who will help solve the nurse shortage facing the state.”
That ultimately will mean better healthcare and quality of life for the residents in the Fort Bend area, she said.
“We’re seeing a lot of highly qualified people wanting to help people and enjoy the rewarding career nursing provides,” Tart said. The strong pool of applicants for the new class that will start in January included individuals with degrees in biology, psychology and business, she noted.
“I want to personally thank everyone at the George Foundation for their decision to forge a partnership with us as we work to provide top healthcare for everyone in this region,” she said. “Our efforts wouldn’t be possible without the support of such forward-looking visionaries.”
