UHV alumnus becomes new principal in Sugar Land

Crews began his new position earlier this month.
“I’m really looking forward to taking on this new challenge,” Crews said. “I think my education and my experience prepared me well.”
Crews earned his master’s degree in administration and supervision from UHV in 1999.
“I think I was very prepared to be an administrator after completing my program,” he said. “The professors were very in touch with what the real job of a principal entails. They did a good job of blending strong educational theory with solid day-to-day practices. “
The internship the program required provided him with helpful, hands-on experience, Crews said.
He also brings to his new position a strong resume of experience. He served as a middle school principal in the Fort Bend school district for seven years. Prior to that, he taught social studies and several other subjects to middle school children.
The task he’s taking on is a large one, he said.
“I went from a school of 900 students to one with 2,800 and four times the faculty,” Crews said. But it’s one he is looking forward to tackling.
His desire to take on such challenges is one of the things that led him to further his education at UHV.
“I really was impressed with the professors there, and I liked that down-home feel of the education because I come from a small town,” Crews said.
It also helped that classes were available at the University of Houston System at Sugar Land, where UHV offers many of the classes.
Crews and his wife, Stacey, have been married for 20 years. They have two children, 17-year-old Ryan and 14-year-old Courtney.
“Mr. Crews is a wonderful example of the kind of students we hope to graduate to make a difference in the lives of students across this region,” said Lawrence Rossow, dean of the UHV School of Education & Human Development. “We’re proud to claim him.”
The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region since 1973 in Victoria, Texas, offers courses leading to more than 80 academic programs in the schools of Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education, Health Professions & Human Development. UHV provides face-to-face classes at its Victoria campus, as well as an instructional site in Katy, Texas, and online classes that students can take from anywhere.
