UHV to help aspiring teachers with job fairs in Victoria, Katy

Those looking for a teaching job should plan to visit two upcoming job fairs presented by the University of Houston-Victoria.

The first will be from 10 a.m. to noon April 15 in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. The second is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. May 5 at the University of Houston System at Cinco Ranch, 4242 Mason Road in Katy. UHV offers education degree programs and many other degrees at the campus.

“These job fairs will give attendees a chance to interact with representatives from school districts across their respective regions who are looking for quality teachers,” said Bethany Bowman, UHV career services specialist. “These opportunities will help meet the needs of both aspiring teachers and area school districts.”

About 27 school districts and organizations are expected to participate in the job fairs. Most participants will be at both locations. The Victoria fair will host districts including Victoria, Goliad and Industrial. The Katy fair will include the Lamar Consolidated and Katy school districts. Both locations are expected to have representatives from districts like Spring Branch, Hallettsville, Bay City and Ford Bend.

Representatives from a few organizations that aren’t schools or districts also are coming. For example, the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office will be at the Victoria fair, and the Region IV Education Service Center will be at both fairs.

“A lot of places have positions for community educators,” Bowman said. “Some education majors decide they’d prefer a career other than teaching in a traditional school classroom.”

Job applicants are encouraged to dress professionally and bring plenty of resumes to distribute at the fairs.
