UHV Part-Time Career Fair to link employers with new students
The University of Houston-Victoria’s first freshmen want part-time employment to help them pay for college expenses. And local business owners and nonprofit organizations want a larger hiring pool of part-time employees.

UHV Career Services will bring both groups together on Aug. 24 for the university’s first Part-Time Job Fair.
“We wanted to find an easy way for our students and those hiring to connect,” said Eunice Mesa, UHV career services coordinator. “We’ve had a lot of interest from both groups.”
The Part-Time Job Fair, which is free for both employers and UHV students, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. in the University Center Multi-Purpose Room, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. Representatives from local businesses, nonprofit organizations and UHV offices must register in advance for the event.
Mesa said the idea for the fair came about because local employers said they were eager to hire UHV students for part-time positions. In addition, more than half of UHV’s FIRST 200 who have registered for classes have indicated that they need to find a part-time job during the school year to help pay for incidentals. In addition, the students weren’t quite sure how to go about finding a job because many of them live outside of Victoria.
“They are not familiar with many of the businesses in Victoria and didn’t know where to start,” Mesa said. “This fair will meet their needs.”
Clifford Grimes, executive director of Victoria County United Way, is one of the representatives from local nonprofits who is looking forward to finding some part-time help next month. He wants to find a student to expand the organization’s social networking initiatives.
“I’d love to find a college student who could work here for four years,” he said. “Once they see what the organization is like, I’m hoping it will encourage them to consider philanthropy management as a career.”
Those who want to have a table at the Part-Time Job Fair should register by 5 p.m. Aug. 20 at https://myinterfase.com/uhv/employer/home.aspx or by contacting Mesa at 361-570-4369 or mesae@uhv.edu. Employers should let Mesa know if they need access to an interview room or electricity for their table. Free wi-fi access also is available.
Although students do not need to register in advance to attend the fair, they should come with plenty of resumes and dress professionally, Mesa said.
