Enrollment Continues to Climb at UHV

According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Web site, state institutions of higher education reported only marginal increases in enrollment—and in many cases, decreases—for the fall 2005 semester. Yet the University of Houston-Victoria is marking its fourth consecutive year for record enrollment. Over 2,600 students have registered for classes at UHV for the fall 2006 semester, which represents a 5.6% increase over last fall’s enrollment.

Several factors contributed to the increase, including two new degree offerings. Thirty-seven students registered for the new Master of Science in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship program. Fifty-two registered for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (36 in Victoria, 16 in Sugar Land)—twice as many as had been anticipated.

Enrollment was up in previously existing programs as well. The School of Arts and Sciences set a new record, boosting its overall enrollment by 18 percent. In the School of Business Administration, enrollment in the MBA program was up 15 percent. The School of Education and Human Development had a significant increase in enrollment for summer classes and now is holding steady for its fall registration.

“We’re pleased that more and more students are finding they can further their personal and professional goals through UHV,” said President Tim Hudson. “As a university, we’re committed to delivering quality educational opportunities that are affordable and convenient. These enrollment increases say we’re meeting students’ needs.”

Enrollment is projected to continue increasing at UHV as the university develops stronger partnerships with area community colleges including Coastal Bend College and Austin Community College. These collaborations will allow students at those schools to complete their bachelor’s degree without relocating by utilizing UHV’s online offerings.
