UHV master’s concentration courses OK’d by national board

A national certification board has approved the five-course sequence for the University of Houston-Victoria School of Education & Human Development’s new graduate concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis.

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board OK’d the course sequence for the ABA program, meaning that students who complete the five-course curriculum sequence and supervised experience required by the board will be approved to take the national certification exam.   Course sequence approval makes it easier for students to petition the national certification exam to be a board-certified behavior analyst once they complete their master’s degree.

“This will help meet the need of educators and other professionals who work with people with disabilities in schools, community service agencies and residential settings,” said Andria Young, special education coordinator for the School of Education & Human Development. “Those interested in behavior analysis want to have the national certificate, and this will help them achieve that goal.”

ABA is a science of behavior change where principles of learning are used to help individuals meet their potential. UHV’s ABA concentration began this fall with its first class, “Principles of Behavior for the Educator.” It is one of the concentrations of the all-online Master of Education in special education.

“The UHV School of Education & Human Development is the only school in the area offering this ABA concentration,” said Lawrence Rossow, the school’s dean. “Many have requested this concentration, and the endorsement by the BACB only strengthens the school’s offerings.”

Young developed the concentration in collaboration with UHV special education faculty members Rachel Martinez and Paul Carlson.

BACB, based in Tallahassee, Fla., is a nonprofit corporation that awards credentials to behavior analysts, state governments and consumers of behavior analysis services.
