UHV School of Nursing Fall Forum focuses on cancer screening
SUGAR LAND – With an eye toward assisting those in medically underserved rural Texas, the third annual UHV Fall Nursing Forum will focus on cancer screening with presentations by experts from MD Anderson Cancer Center.
The forum will be Nov. 12 and 13 in Brazos Hall at the UH System at Sugar Land, 14004 University Blvd. The theme is “Cancer Screening for Nurses in Rural or Medically Underserved Areas of Texas.”
“There is a big need for cancer screening in rural communities. It’s harder for smaller communities to keep up with all the information. This forum is for our practicing nurses, and it will help prepare those who are on the front lines,” said Denise Neill, an assistant professor in the UHV School of Nursing and the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing/Master of Science in Nursing coordinator.

The Nov. 12 cancer screening workshop will be from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of Brazos Hall. The workshop is open to any licensed vocational nurse, RN or advanced practice nurse.
On Nov. 13, the clinical application practice will take place from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. in the Fred and Mabel Parks Assessment Center in Brazos Hall. This session is open to the first 14 direct care RNs or advanced practitioner applicants who attended the first day of the forum. Participants will go to one of the two sessions, practice comprehensive clinical breast exams on standardized patient models, and discuss appropriate cervical cancer screening and diagnostic management.
“We’ve had a tremendous response so far,” Neill said. “In fact, we have tentatively scheduled a third clinical application practice session for Nov. 15.”
The fee is $25 before Friday, which includes a box lunch, or $30 at the door with no lunch. Registration fees are nonrefundable.

The event qualifies for seven Continuing Education Units for the Nov. 12 workshop, with additional CEUs for the Nov. 13 practice.
Neill said the goal of the forum is to help practitioners get testing and screenings done early while the cancers are still treatable and to differentiate those cancers that cannot be screened from those for which screenings are readily available.
The forum will focus on cancers in both male and female patients.
